Week 3: Storyboarding

This is the fourth scene to the story:-

This shot is looking through a balcony window. Its a high angle shot looking down at the cat showing the devastation of the environment through a different angle

This shot is a zoom in of the first one to get more detail, and to show where the cat is heading. It would be quite a long shot, just to show off the actual environment around the cat

This shot is showing the trail of the cat and what he is doing at a low mid shot level. The cat jumps onto a rusty car and then jumps of it following the ball of string. This is to show the cats’ complete disregard for his surroundings.

This shot is showing the entrance to the courtyard, it’s a close up of the archway, this shot would probably be a four second shot showing the cat following the ball of wool into the next scene which Sam is storyboarding.

Week 2: Barcelona 18/10/07

Our trip to Barcelona was very crucial to our project. We had four days to look at the architecture, the type of factors we were looking for where mainly in the back alleys leading away from the main streets. we took pictures of brickwork, old buildings, so that it would give us a good sense of a colour pallet and how to structure our buildings. The picture shown here signifies the type of look we are going for in our environment. The way in which the light is positioned and how the light effects the rest of the buildings.

I took some pictures of brick textures, particularly older bricks to see how they look. This picture I took of the bricks helped me to see not just the textures but the type of colour pallet it has.

I took interest in this building because of the extraordinary pattern which has been designed on it. In our group we had also talked about how we might have clothes hanging from the line in our environment. You can also clearly observe that this particular building is quite old in itself, there is dust trail coming from each of the windows and the pattern on the building is quite faded.

This is a picture of a courtyard we found in Barcelona, it was quite modernized and the place was filled with restaurants around the edges. The factor which struck me to this piece was the fountain in the middle of the courtyard. The detail was very classic it had a Renaissance feel to it.

Week 1: Initial character ideas 18/10/07

We talked about having one or two characters in our environment to make it more interesting to watch. The first idea for a character was to have a cat, so I looked at different cat films and television shows, to help get a better understanding on cat design and cat movement.

The Most helpful out of all of the films and television shows I watched, was the Disney animated feature film 'The Aristocats'. There is a particular part in the film where it shows great use of cat animation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AOEHW2SfWA

We also decided that it might be nice to have someone or something that the cat could interact with. We talked about having an old woman because we didn't really want another potentially strong and vibrant character, we believed it would take away from the environment.

These are my initial sketches and design ideas for the old woman. I was looking more at detail and postures that might compliment the environment.

I looked at two artists, Angela Talbot who is a skilled sculpture and Lucian Frued who is an artist. I picked both these individuals to look at because I loved there attention to detail, both artists have used a realistic approach to their work.

I also decided to look at more unrealistic forms of old woman characters to see a variety, and maybe to incorporate it into the final design.

Week 1: Research and Developing Ideas 18/10/07

Our first ideas for our environment mainly bordered on quite a decollete theme quite an empty ruined environment. We talked about different films and games we had seen that might help us get a vivid image and a sense of direction as to where we were going in our development. We looked at films such as 'Desparado', Baz Lurhmans 'Romeo and Juliet' and games such as 'Gears of War' and 'Fallout 3'

One of the trailers I looked at was ‘I Am Legend’ which stars Will Smith as the last man on earth. The images produced by the trailer sparks an influence as to what we were looking for; that serene sense of displacement within the surroundings.
